Radiology department of the university hospital Essen counts on TOTOKU
The University Hospital Essen has around 1,300 beds and offers full medical service. In the year 2001 and 2002 the University Hospital Essen upgraded their radiology department from analog to digital. Step by step a Radiology Information System as well as a Picture Archiving and Communication System were established, both systems being from GE. “By starting with the digitalization we had to install new diagnostic displays to replace the existing displays,“ reflected the leading radiographer Mr. Lothar Sakowski. So the radiologists tested diagnostic displays from various manufacturers also displays from TOTOKU. All of those were used for daily routine by 15 medical specialists and 20 assistant doctors to allow a direct comparison. “Everybody agreed that the TOTOKU displays offer the best resolution to ensure the ideal diagnose for our patients“. outlines Prof. Dr. Michael Forsting, director of the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventionel radiology and Neuroradiology at the University Hospital Essen, after the test period.
The institute for diagnostic and interventionel radiology and neuroradiology covers the whole radiologic range. Every year around 120,000 radiologic examinations are done at around 65,000 patients. Examinations are performed in different localisations, as images are being read centrally at the institute.
Another convincing argument was, beside the high image quality, the good service of TOTOKUs distribution partner Rein EDV. Here Mr. Sakowski pointed out especially the extended warranty time as a criteria for the decision: “At this time the standard warranty period was two years. We were be able to negotiate a warranty period of five years, most probably as one of the first hospitals in Germany.“ Nowadays the five years warranty is offered by default for all displays. „The long warranty period brings an economic advantage for the hospital. In five years the higher price will pay off, as said by the leading radiographer.
Within two years Rein EDV equipped step by step the whole radiology department with TOTOKU displays. Right now there are in total 50 displays installed: 46 pieces of 2 Megapixel screens and four 5-MP displays of ME551i2 for the the curative mammography.
According to Sakowski the implementation of the new displays proceeded without any trouble:“ The supplier prepared the roll out quite well. At the lab all necessary testing was carried out to ensure the compatibility of the PACS and the Matrox Videocards and the entire setup. Because of this the final installation on site worked out like expected without any surprises. After an average time of 15 minutes every display was installed.“
The installation was done after the regular working time of the raiologists. When they returned the next day they were able to work with the new TOTOKU screens. “The users embraced the new displays directly. There was no initial period needed for the new solution“, explains Prof. Dr. Forsting.
“We are very satisfied with the existing solution and without any hesitation, TOTOKU would again be our first choice. There is no reason to look for a new supplier. Our motto is: test other vendors yes, buy from others vendors, never. After all we have a convincing package of hardware, software and service,“summarizes Sakowski from his experiences over the last number of years.
